Playing catch up on blogging fall sessions is just fine with me, because I get to relive all of these incredible moments with my beautiful fall families! This sweet family showed up for their fall family photos in Portland ready to cuddle and laugh. It was PERFECTION! We always chat about what my clients want in their end gallery: mostly posed, everyone look at the camera photos, mostly candid, or a mix of both. This family was hoping to capture mostly candid moments that showed how much they loved being together. And they were ready to have fun together!
Portland Fall Family Photos FAQs
When is the best time for fall family photos in Portland?
Fall family photos in Portland are best taken in the last few weeks of October and sometimes the first week of November. The leaves will have started to turn, but we’ll still have drier weather for your photoshoot. Usually, once November hits, we get our first big storm. This tends to knock all the leaves off of the trees, leaving you with bare branches in the background instead of fall color. We can absolutely still work with this, but there will be less fall color if that’s what you have your heart set on. One last note: fall is the busiest season for portrait photographers, so reach out by August to get on my fall calendar. My booking calendar opens to my email list subscribers first, usually in mid-July, and you can get on that list here.
What to Wear for Autumn Family Photos
This family went with the light neutral color palette that I adore–and I love how timeless and organic it looks! The easiest way to get this look is to mix and match shades of light neutrals like cream, beige, and grey. Use textures like chunky knits and ruffles to add some extra interest: these photograph beautifully. If you’d like to add in a bit more color while still keeping your family’s outfits light and airy in the photos, check out my blog post on What to Wear for Bright and Airy Fall Family Photos.
What are the Best Fall Family Picture Poses?
I’ll let you in on a little secret–most of the candid images I share are only MOSTLY candid. I still want my clients to feel confident about their photos, and I want them to feel taken care of, never unsure about what to do. (Or am I the only one who can’t ever figure out what to do with my hands during photos of myself??) I’ll tell them how to sit or stand in the most flattering way that allows them to comfortably interact with each other while looking their best and in the best light! After we get situated, it’s easy to love on their kids and get some incredible photos they’ll love for years. I adored this family’s joy and willingness to relax and have fun, and these are some of my favorite fall family photos!
Autumn Photoshoot Ideas
The field location did NOT disappoint for this fall session. We caught some dry weather, and we were able to do a late afternoon session. I adore late afternoon sessions on clear days because look at that GLOW! So perfect. The field is hands down one of my favorite places for autumn photoshoots because it feels so classic and images from it can work on your walls year-round. There’s just a hint of the fall leaves in the background.
However, I have also loved fall family photos in the apple orchard or in front of an old barn. Sometimes we can even find a good hay bale for a fall family photo!
